Proof of Holding with Helium (LT)

Proof of Holding with Helium (LT)

Helium Leak Testing is a nondestructive method for detecting leaks in components such as pipes and tanks.

The principle behind this test is based on the possibility that a fluid, in this case helium gas, can migrate through a passage between two separate regions, such as the inside and outside of the component, in the presence of a positive or negative pressure difference.

DETECTABLE CHARACTERISTICS
with the Holding Test with Helium (LT)

Detection of leaks on components such as pipes and tanks. Only through defects are detected.
Leak Test methods are different and are divided into:

VACUUM METHOD

  • Type of test =
    Quantitative

  • Test sensitivity =
    10E-6 mbar.l/s up to 10E-12 mbar.l/s

  • Scope of application =
    All components requiring high examination sensitivity
  • In one region (e.g., interior), by means of pumping units, a vacuum is performed, connecting the spectrometer (reading instrument) directly to the region where the vacuum was performed. Then the opposite region (outside) is placed in helium atmosphere or overpressure, so that if there are any leaks, helium will pass through these and be detected by the spectrometer.

METHOD IN PRESSURE (Sniffer Method)

  • Type of test =
    Qualitative

  • Test sensitivity =
    10E-6 mbar.l/s up to 10E-03 mbar.l/s

  • Scope of application =
    all components requiring examination sensitivity max 10E-6 mbar.l/s
  • The component under test is pressurized with helium to the test pressure (normally no more than 1 bar), and after a diffusion period the gas will begin to flow from any leaks.
  • All areas involved in the test will be scanned with probe (sniffer) connected to the spectrometer, allowing localization and discrimination of leaks.

FEATURES
Of Holding Trials with Helium (LT)

High sensitivity, even for very small capillaries undetectable by other methods.

The use of helium as a tracer gas in leak tests and in the search for leaks offers significant advantages such as:

  • is a noble and inert gas so it does not bind with any other molecule;
  • is present in the environment in small amounts (about 5 ppmV);
  • excellent instrumental sensitivity helium has molecular mass 4;
  • great capillarity, which allows it to flow into escape routes more easily than other types of gases with larger molecules.

APPLICATIONS
Proof of Holding with Helium (LT)

Leak testing of components under pressure and vacuum.
We also carry out leak tests using the high vacuum method to check for even very small leaks.
